Caring for your jewelry

A few minutes of care keeps diamonds bright and gold looking new for decades. Here's what we tell every client, and when to bring a piece in to us.

Clean it in five minutes

  1. 1

    Soak

Use warm water with a drop of dish soap. Ten minutes loosens the lotion and skin oils that make a diamond look dull.

  2. 2

    Brush

Use a soft toothbrush and go gently, especially under the stone where the light comes in.

  3. 3

    Rinse and dry

Rinse it in a bowl, never over an open drain. Pat it dry with a lint-free cloth.

Keep it away from

What damages jewelry

  • Chlorine in pools, hot tubs, and bleach, which weakens gold
  • Hard knocks, so take rings off for the gym and yard work
  • Ultrasonic cleaners, if the piece has emeralds, pearls, or opals
  • Lotion, perfume, and hairspray put on over your jewelry
  • Loose storage, since diamonds scratch other stones and metal
  • Toothpaste and baking soda, which are too abrasive

Bring your rings in twice a year

Prongs wear down and stones work loose long before they fall out. Twice a year, our master jeweler will check your setting, tighten anything that needs it, and clean and polish the piece at no charge. You don't need an appointment.
